The charge stored by the capacitor C in the given circuit in the steady state is ____μC.
(A)12.5
(B)10✓ Correct
(C)7.5
(D)5
Answer: (B)
Solution
In the steady state the capacitor is fully charged and its branch carries no current. For the polarity the 2.5V cell sets up, the diode in the 3Ω branch is reverse biased and blocks, while the diode in the 4Ω branch is forward biased and conducts. The active loop is therefore the cell with its 1Ω in series with the 4Ω resistor, giving i=1+42.5=0.5A. Since no current flows through the 2Ω in series with the capacitor, there is no drop across it and the capacitor voltage equals the voltage across the 4Ω branch, VC=0.5×4=2V. The stored charge is Q=CVC=5μF×2V=10μC.
