Given below are two statements :

Statement-I : Sublimation is used for the separation and purification of compounds with low melting point.

Statement-II : The boiling point of a liquid increases as the external pressure is reduced.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. (A)Statement-I is false but Statement-II is true.
  2. (B)Statement-I is true but Statement-II is false.
  3. (C)Both Statement-I and Statement-II are true.
  4. (D)Both Statement-I and Statement-II are false.✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

Sublimation separates a solid that passes directly into vapour on heating and re-forms on cooling; the property that makes it possible is an appreciable vapour pressure below the melting point, not a low melting point, so the first statement is incorrect. A liquid boils when its vapour pressure equals the external pressure, so reducing the external pressure lowers the boiling point rather than raising it, making the second statement incorrect as well. Both statements are false.
