A parallel plate capacitor with plate separation 5 mm is charged by a battery. On introducing a mica sheet of 2 mm and maintaining the connections of the plates with the terminals of the battery, it is found that it draws 25% more charge from the battery. The dielectric constant of mica is ____.
(A)2.5
(B)2.0✓ Correct
(C)1.5
(D)1.0
Answer: (B)
Solution
With the battery still connected the voltage is fixed, so the charge drawn is proportional to the capacitance. Inserting a mica sheet of thickness t=2 mm and dielectric constant K into the 5 mm gap leaves 3 mm of air, giving (thicknesses in mm) an equivalent capacitance C′=(d−t)+Ktε0A=3+K2ε0A, while the original capacitance is C=5ε0A. A 25% increase in charge means C′=1.25C: 3+K2ε0A=1.25×5ε0A=4ε0A. Hence 3+K2=4, so K2=1 and K=2.
