Let the angles made with the positive x-axis by two straight lines drawn from the point P(2,3) and meeting the line x+y=6 at a distance 32 from the point P be θ1 and θ2. Then the value of (θ1+θ2) is :
(A)12π
(B)6π
(C)2π✓ Correct
(D)3π
Answer: (C)
Solution
A point on the line through P(2,3) inclined at angle θ to the positive x-axis, at distance r=32 from P, is (2+rcosθ,3+rsinθ). For this point to lie on x+y=6, (2+rcosθ)+(3+rsinθ)=6, so r(cosθ+sinθ)=1 and cosθ+sinθ=r1=23. Squaring, 1+sin2θ=23, hence sin2θ=21. The two admissible inclinations give 2θ1=6π and 2θ2=65π, so θ1=12π and θ2=125π. Therefore θ1+θ2=2π.
