At minimum deviation

n = \frac{sin ( \frac{A + δ _{min}}{2} )}{sin ( \frac{A}{2} )}

. With

δ_{min} = A

this becomes

n = \frac{sin A}{sin ( A /2 )} = 2 cos (\frac{A}{2})

. A prism has a refracting angle in the range

0 < A < 9 0^{\circ}

. As

A \to 0

n \to 2 cos 0^{\circ} = 2

, and as

A \to 9 0^{\circ}

n \to 2 cos 4 5^{\circ} = 2
