Let y=x be the equation of a chord of the circle C1 (in the closed half-plane x≥0) of diameter 10 passing through the origin. Let C2 be another circle described on the given chord as its diameter. If the equation of the chord of the circle C2, which passes through the point (2,3) and is farthest from the center of C2, is x+ay+b=0, then a−b is equal to :
(A)10
(B)-6
(C)-2✓ Correct
(D)6
Answer: (C)
Solution
The circle C1 has radius 5, passes through the origin and lies in x≥0, so its centre is (5,0) and C1:(x−5)2+y2=25. The chord y=x meets C1 where (x−5)2+x2=25, i.e. 2x2−10x=0, giving the endpoints (0,0) and (5,5). Taking this chord as a diameter, C2 has centre (25,25) and equation x2+y2−5x−5y=0. Among the chords of C2 through (2,3), the one farthest from the centre is perpendicular to the join of the centre to (2,3); that join has slope 2−5/23−5/2=−1, so the required chord has slope 1. Its equation is y−3=x−2, i.e. x−y+1=0. Comparing with x+ay+b=0 gives a=−1 and b=1, so a−b=−2.
