Given below are two statements : One is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R
Assertion A :- Sodium is about 30 times as abundant as potassium in the oceans.
Reason R :- Potassium is bigger in size than sodium.
In the light of above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
Assertion A :- Sodium is about 30 times as abundant as potassium in the oceans.
Reason R :- Potassium is bigger in size than sodium.
In the light of above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
- (A)Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A .✓ Correct
- (B)A is true but R is false.
- (C)A is false but R is true
- (D)Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.
Answer: (A)
Solution
Sodium is far more abundant than potassium in sea water, about thirty times as much, so the assertion is true, and potassium is larger than sodium, so the reason is true as well. Because the potassium ion is bigger, it fits into the spaces of clay and silicate minerals and is strongly held by soils and taken up by plants, while the smaller sodium ion stays in solution and is carried into the sea. The larger size of potassium is thus the reason why less of it reaches the oceans, so the reason correctly explains the assertion.
