The correct order of reactivity of following haloarenes towards nucleophilic substitution with aqueous NaOH is :
A. (see structure)
B. (see structure)
C. (see structure)
D. (see structure)

Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Structure A
A
Structure B
B
Structure C
C
Structure D
D
  1. (A)A B D C
  2. (B)C A D B
  3. (C)D C B A
  4. (D)D B A C✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

Nucleophilic aromatic substitution is favoured when electron-withdrawing nitro groups stabilise the negative charge of the intermediate and is hindered when an electron-donating group enriches the ring. The compound carrying three nitro groups is activated most and reacts fastest. The compound with a single ortho nitro group comes next. Plain chlorobenzene, with no activating group, is slower, and the compound carrying an electron-releasing methoxy group is the least reactive. The order of reactivity is the trinitro compound, then the mononitro compound, then chlorobenzene, then the methoxy compound.
