The substrate carries a primary amide, a ketone and an isolated exocyclic C=C. Lithium aluminium hydride reduces the amide fully to a primary amine (−CONH2 becomes −CH2NH2) and the ketone to a secondary alcohol, but it leaves the isolated carbon-carbon double bond untouched. After the acidic work-up the product keeps its exocyclic methylene group, carries a −CH2NH2 group where the amide was and an −OH where the ketone was. The product X is H2NCH2−CH(CH3)−C(=CH2)−CH(OH)−CH2CH3.
