Draw an equipotential surface for a system consisting of two charges Q, −Q separated by a distance r in air.
Solution
Around each charge the equipotential surfaces are closed curves (circles in a plane section), crowded near the charges and more widely spaced farther away. The plane perpendicular to the line joining the charges and passing through its mid-point is at zero potential, since the potentials of +Q and −Q cancel there.
