A series LCR circuit is connected to a source having voltage v=vmsinωt. Derive the expression for the instantaneous current I and its phase relationship to the applied voltage. Obtain the condition for resonance to occur. Define 'power factor' and state the conditions under which it is (i) maximum and (ii) minimum.
Solution
Using the phasor method, VR=IR is in phase with I, VL=IXL leads by 2π, and VC=IXC lags by 2π. The resultant source voltage has magnitude
vm=ImR2+(XL−XC)2=ImZ
so the instantaneous current is
I=R2+(ωL−ωC1)2vmsin(ωt−ϕ),tanϕ=RXL−XC
The current lags the voltage by ϕ when XL>XC and leads when XC>XL. Resonance: when XL=XC, i.e.
ωL=ωC1⇒ω=LC1
then Z=R (minimum) and I is maximum. Power factor is cosϕ=ZR. It is (i) maximum (=1) when the circuit is purely resistive or at resonance, and (ii) minimum (=0) for a purely inductive or purely capacitive circuit.
