In a series LCR circuit connected to an AC source of voltage v=vmsinωt, use a phasor diagram to derive an expression for the current in the circuit. Hence obtain the expression for the power dissipated in the circuit, and show that the power dissipated at resonance is maximum.
Solution
From the phasor diagram the source voltage is the resultant of VR, VL and VC:
so the current is i=Zvmsin(ωt+ϕ) with tanϕ=RXC−XL. The instantaneous power is p=vi, and its average over a cycle (the oscillatory term averages to zero) is
P=2vmimcosϕ=VrmsIrmscosϕ
At resonance XL=XC, so Z=R, ϕ=0 and cosϕ=1. Then the current is largest and
Pmax=Rvrms2
showing the power dissipated is maximum at resonance.
