How are infrared waves produced? Why are these waves referred to as heat waves? Give any two uses of infrared waves.

Solution

Infrared waves are produced by hot bodies and by the thermal vibration of atoms and molecules --- the hotter the body, the more infrared it emits.
They are called heat waves because they are strongly absorbed by water and most substances, increasing the molecular vibration and hence the temperature of the absorbing body.
Two uses: (i) thermal imaging and night-vision devices; (ii) remote controls for appliances (and physiotherapy to relieve muscular strain).
