(a) Which of the following species cannot act as a ligand? Give a reason.
OH⁻, NH, CHNH, HO
(b) The complex [Co(NH)(NO)]Cl is red in colour. Give the IUPAC name of its linkage isomer.

Solution

(a) A ligand must donate a lone pair to the metal. NH has no lone pair on nitrogen (all four pairs are in N–H bonds) and its positive charge repels cations — so NH cannot act as a ligand. OH, CHNH and HO all carry donor lone pairs.
(b) The linkage isomer binds nitrite through oxygen: [Co(NH)(ONO)]Cl —
\textbf{pentaamminenitrito-O-cobalt(III) chloride}.
