a) What is the basis of the formation of the spectrochemical series?
b) Draw the structures of the geometrical isomers of the following coordination complexes:
[Co(NH)Cl] and [CoCl(en)]

Solution

(a) The spectrochemical series arranges ligands in order of increasing crystal-field splitting energy Δ that they cause; the order is established experimentally from the absorption spectra of complexes:

(b) [Co(NH)Cl] (MAB): \textit{facial (fac)} — three Cl on one triangular face; \textit{meridional (mer)} — three Cl spanning a meridian (two trans, one cis).
[CoCl(en)] (M(AA)B): \textit{cis} — Cl's adjacent (chiral form); \textit{trans} — Cl's opposite.
