Write the structures and names of all the stereoisomers of the following compounds:
i) [Co(en)]Cl
ii) [Pt(NH)Cl]
iii) [Fe(NH)Cl]Cl

Solution

(i) [Co(en)]Cl — tris(ethane-1,2-diamine)cobalt(III) chloride: the tris-chelate cation is chiral; \textbf{two optical isomers} (d- and l-), drawn as mirror-image octahedra.
(ii) [Pt(NH)Cl] — square planar MAB: \textbf{cis-} and \textbf{trans-diamminedichloridoplatinum(II)} (Cl's at 90° vs 180°).
(iii) [Fe(NH)Cl]Cl — octahedral MAB: \textbf{cis-} and \textbf{trans-tetraamminedichloridoiron(III) chloride}.
