For designing a voltmeter of range 50 V and an ammeter of range 10 mA using a galvanometer which has a coil of resistance 54Ω showing a full scale deflection for 1 mA as in figure.
(A) for voltmeter R≈50kΩ (B) for ammeter r≈0.2Ω (C) for ammeter r≈6Ω (D) for voltmeter R≈5kΩ (E) for voltmeter R≈500Ω
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
(A)(C) and (E)
(B)(C) and (D)
(C)(A) and (C)✓ Correct
(D)(A) and (B)
Answer: (C)
Solution
For the voltmeter a resistance R is placed in series so that full-scale current flows at 50V: R=IgV−G=10−350−54≈50kΩ. For the ammeter a shunt r carries the surplus current: r=I−IgIgG=(10−1)×10−310−3×54=6Ω. Thus the voltmeter needs about 50kΩ in series and the ammeter about 6Ω as a shunt.
