A particle is moving with constant speed in a circular path. When the particle turns by an angle 90∘, the ratio of instantaneous velocity to its average velocity is π:x2. The value of x will be
(A)2✓ Correct
(B)5
(C)1
(D)7
Answer: (A)
Solution
The speed v is constant, so the instantaneous velocity has magnitude v. On turning through 90∘ the particle covers a quarter of the circle, an arc length 2πR, so the time taken is t=2vπR. Its displacement is the chord joining the start and end points, of length R2, so the average velocity is ⟨v⟩=πR/2vR2=π22v. Hence ⟨v⟩v=22π, and comparing with π:x2 gives x=2.
