Which of the following complex will show largest splitting of d-orbitals?
- (A)
- (B)
- (C)✓ Correct
- (D)
Answer: (C)
Solution
The magnitude of the crystal-field splitting is set mainly by the field strength of the ligand, as ordered in the spectrochemical series. For the common centre carrying oxalate, fluoride, cyanide or ammonia, cyanide is by far the strongest-field ligand while fluoride is the weakest. A stronger field pushes the orbitals further apart, so the hexacyanidoferrate(III) ion shows the largest splitting of the orbitals.
