As shown in the figure, a network of resistors is connected to a battery of 24 V with an internal resistance of 3Ω. The currents through the resistors R4 and R5 are I4 and I5 respectively. The values of I4 and I5 are :
(A)I4=58A and I5=52A
(B)I4=524A and I5=56A
(C)I4=56A and I5=524A
(D)I4=52A and I5=58A✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
The two 2Ω resistors R1 and R2 in parallel give 1Ω, while R4=20Ω with R5=5Ω in parallel give 4Ω. Adding these to R3=2Ω, R6=2Ω and the internal 3Ω makes the total resistance 12Ω, so the battery drives 1224=2 A. This current then splits between R4 and R5 in inverse proportion to their resistances, giving I4=2×255=52 A and I5=2×2520=58 A.
