Statement I: Acceleration due to earth's gravity decreases as you go 'up' or 'down' from earth's surface.
Statement II: Acceleration due to earth's gravity is same at a height 'h' and depth 'd' from earth's surface, if h=d.
In the light of above statements, choose the most appropriate answer form the options given below
(A)Statement I is incorrect but statement II is correct
(B)Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
(C)Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect✓ Correct
(D)Both Statement I and II are correct
Answer: (C)
Solution
At a height h above the surface the gravity is gh=(1+h/R)2g, and at a depth d below it the gravity is gd=g(1−Rd); both lie below the surface value, so gravity decreases whether one moves up or down. For small h, gh≈g(1−R2h), while gd=g(1−Rd). With h=d the height expression falls off twice as fast as the depth expression, so the two are unequal. Hence the first statement is correct and the second is not.
