Match List I with List II :

List I:
A. Isothermal Process
B. Adiabatic Process
C. Isochoric Process
D. Isobaric Process

List II:
I. Work done by the gas decreases internal energy
II. No change in internal energy
III. The heat absorbed goes partly to increase internal energy and partly to do work
IV. No work is done on or by the gas

Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

Answer: A → II, B → I, C → IV, D → III

Solution

Reading each process through the first law with : an isothermal change holds temperature fixed, so its internal energy stays the same; an adiabatic change exchanges no heat, so the work the gas does comes straight out of its internal energy; an isochoric change holds volume fixed, so no work is done on or by the gas; an isobaric change lets the gas expand while warming, so the heat supplied is shared between raising internal energy and doing work. Thus the isothermal process pairs with no change in internal energy, the adiabatic with work done by the gas lowering internal energy, the isochoric with no work done, and the isobaric with heat split between internal energy and work.
