Given below are two statements:
Statement I: The decrease in first ionization enthalpy from B to Al is much larger than that from Al to Ga.
Statement II: The d orbitals in Ga are completely filled.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below
Statement I: The decrease in first ionization enthalpy from B to Al is much larger than that from Al to Ga.
Statement II: The d orbitals in Ga are completely filled.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below
- (A)Statement I is incorrect but statement II is correct.
- (B)Both the statements I and II are correct✓ Correct
- (C)Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect
- (D)Both the statements I and II are incorrect
Answer: (B)
Solution
The first ionization enthalpies are , and . From B to Al the value falls by about (large decrease, from the big rise in atomic size), whereas from Al to Ga it does not fall at all Ga is in fact marginally higher. So the decrease from B to Al is much larger than that from Al to Ga, and Statement I is correct. Gallium is : its 3d orbitals are completely filled, and these electrons shield the 4p electron poorly, raising the effective nuclear charge and explaining why IE does not drop from Al to Ga. Statement II is also correct. Hence both statements are correct.
