Chlorides of which metal are soluble in organic solvents:
- (A)Ca
- (B)Mg
- (C)K
- (D)Be✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Solubility in a non-polar organic solvent calls for a chloride that is itself largely covalent. The beryllium ion is very small and strongly polarising, so it distorts the chloride electron cloud heavily and beryllium chloride is appreciably covalent, dissolving in organic solvents. The chlorides of magnesium, calcium and potassium are essentially ionic and dissolve in water rather than in organic media. The metal whose chloride dissolves in organic solvents is therefore beryllium.
