An electrical bulb rated 220 V, 100 W, is connected in series with another bulb rated 220 V, 60 W. If the voltage across combination is 220 V, the power consumed by the 100 W bulb will be about ____ W.

Answer: 14

Solution

The resistances are

R_{1} = \frac{V ^{2}}{P} = \frac{22 0 ^{2}}{100} = 484 Ω

and

R_{2} = \frac{22 0 ^{2}}{60} = \frac{4840}{6} Ω

. In series, the current is

I = \frac{220}{R _{1} + R _{2}} = \frac{220}{484 + 806.67} = \frac{220}{1290.67} \approx 0.17

A. The power consumed by the 100 W bulb is

P_{1} = I^{2} R_{1} = (0.17)^{2} \times 484 \approx 14
