Given below are two statements: One is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R
Assertion A : Zero orbital overlap is an out of phase overlap.
Reason : It results due to different orientation/ direction of approach of orbitals.
In the light of the above statements. Choose the correct answer from the options given below
Assertion A : Zero orbital overlap is an out of phase overlap.
Reason : It results due to different orientation/ direction of approach of orbitals.
In the light of the above statements. Choose the correct answer from the options given below
- (A)Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A✓ Correct
- (B)Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
- (C)A is true but R is false
- (D)A is false but R is true
Answer: (A)
Solution
Zero orbital overlap occurs when orbitals approach in such a way that positive and negative lobes cancel each other (out of phase overlap). This happens due to different orientations or directions of approach of the orbitals. For example, when a p-orbital approaches another p-orbital sideways such that the positive lobe of one overlaps with the negative lobe of the other, the net overlap is zero. Both statements are true and R correctly explains A.
