Given below are two statements:

Statement I: For KI, molar conductivity increases steeply with dilution.
Statement II: For carbonic acid, molar conductivity increases slowly with dilution.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:
  1. (A)Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. (B)Both Statement I and Statement II are false✓ Correct
  3. (C)Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. (D)Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Answer: (B)

Solution

Statement I is false: KI is a strong electrolyte, which is almost completely ionized even at higher concentrations. Therefore, its molar conductivity remains nearly constant (or increases only slightly) with dilution.

Statement II is false: Carbonic acid is a weak electrolyte. For weak electrolytes, molar conductivity increases sharply (not slowly) with dilution because dilution increases the degree of ionization significantly.

Therefore, both statements are false.
