For a Carnot engine, efficiency

η = 1 - \frac{T _{2}}{T _{1}} = \frac{W}{Q _{1}}

. Given

T_{1} = 800

T_{2} = 200

W = 12 \times 1 0^{6}

J. Thus

η = 1 - \frac{200}{800} = \frac{3}{4}

. From

\frac{3}{4} = \frac{12 \times 1 0 ^{6}}{Q _{1}}

, we get

Q_{1} = 16 \times 1 0^{6}
