A ball is thrown up vertically with a certain velocity so that, it reaches a maximum height h . Find the ratio of the times in which it is at height 3h while going up and coming down respectively.
(A)2+12−1
(B)3+23−2✓ Correct
(C)3+13−1
(D)31
Answer: (B)
Solution
From maximum height h=2gu2, we get u=2gh. Using s=ut−21gt2 with s=3h: 3h=2ght−21gt2. Rearranging: 2gt2−2ght+3h=0. The two roots t1 (going up) and t2 (coming down) satisfy: t1+t2=g22gh and t1t2=3g2h. Using the quadratic formula, t1=g2gh−2gh−32gh=g2gh−34gh and t2=g2gh+34gh. The ratio t2t1=2gh+34gh2gh−34gh=3+23−2.
