A Carnot engine whose heat sinks at 27∘C, has an efficiency of 25%. By how many degrees should the temperature of the source be changed to increase the efficiency by 100% of the original efficiency ?
(A)Increases by 18∘C
(B)Increase by 200∘C✓ Correct
(C)Increase by 120∘C
(D)Increase by 73∘
Answer: (B)
Solution
For a Carnot engine, efficiency η=1−THTC where temperatures are in Kelvin.
Initially: TC=300 K, η=0.25
0.25=1−TH300⇒TH300=0.75⇒TH=400 K
Increasing efficiency by 100% of original means new efficiency = 0.25+0.25=0.50:
0.50=1−TH′300⇒TH′300=0.50⇒TH′=600 K
Increase in temperature = 600−400=200 K = 200∘C
The answer is (B).
