Given below are two statements:
Statement I : The limiting molar conductivity of KCl (strong electrolyte) is higher compared to that of (weak electrolyte).
Statement II: Molar conductivity decreases with decrease in concentration of electrolyte.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
Statement I : The limiting molar conductivity of KCl (strong electrolyte) is higher compared to that of (weak electrolyte).
Statement II: Molar conductivity decreases with decrease in concentration of electrolyte.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
- (A)Statement I is false but Statement II is true.
- (B)Both Statement I and Statement II are false.✓ Correct
- (C)Both Statement I and Statement II are true.
- (D)Statement I is true but Statement II is false.
Answer: (B)
Solution
Limiting molar conductivity is the sum of the independent contributions of the ions, and for acetic acid one of these is the hydrogen ion, whose molar conductivity is far larger than that of any other ion because it travels by proton hopping through the hydrogen-bonded network rather than by bodily migration. This gives against , so the limiting value for potassium chloride is the smaller of the two and Statement I is false. On dilution the degree of dissociation rises and interionic attractions weaken, so molar conductivity increases as concentration falls, and Statement II is false as well. Both Statement I and Statement II are false.
