The four arms of a Wheatstone bridge have resistances as shown in the figure. A galvanometer of 15Ω resistance is connected across BD. Calculate the current through the galvanometer when a potential difference of 10 V is maintained across AC.
(A)4.87μA
(B)2.44 mA
(C)4.87 mA✓ Correct
(D)2.44μA
Answer: (C)
Solution
With the galvanometer branch removed, ABC carries 100+10=110Ω and ADC carries 60+5=65Ω across the same 10 V. Taking VA=10 V and VC=0,
VB=10−11010(100)=1110V,VD=10−6510(60)=1310V
so the open-circuit voltage across BD is 1110−1310=14320=0.1399 V. Replacing the source by a short joins A to C, and the resistance looking back into the bridge from B and D is
Rth=110100×10+6560×5=11100+1360=13.71Ω
The galvanometer therefore carries
Ig=13.71+150.1399=4.87×10−3A
that is, a current of 4.87 mA.
