In a meter bridge experiment S is a standard resistance. R is a resistance wire. It is found that balancing length is ℓ=25 cm. If R is replaced by a wire of half length and half diameter that of R of same material, then the balancing distance ℓ′ (in cm) will now be ____.
Answer: 40
Solution
At balance the meter bridge compares the two gap resistances through the lengths: SR=100−ℓℓ=7525=31, so S=3R. Replacing the wire by one of half the length and half the diameter changes its resistance through R∝d2length: halving the length divides by two while halving the diameter multiplies by four, giving a net R′=2R. The new balance satisfies SR′=100−ℓ′ℓ′, i.e. 3R2R=100−ℓ′ℓ′, so 32=100−ℓ′ℓ′. Then 3ℓ′=2(100−ℓ′), and ℓ′=40cm.
