The compound that inhibits the growth of tumors is:
- (A)trans -
- (B)trans -
- (C)cis
- (D)cis ✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Cisplatin, cis-, is the well-known anticancer drug. Its activity comes from the two chloride ligands sitting next to each other in the cis arrangement: once inside the cell they are displaced by nitrogen atoms of neighbouring DNA bases, cross-linking the strands and blocking replication, which halts tumour growth. The trans platinum isomer and the palladium analogues lack this effect, so the tumour-inhibiting compound is cis-.
