In the given circuit, charge Q2 on the 2μF capacitor changes as C is varied from 1μF to 3μF. Q2 as a function of 'C' is given properly by: (figures are drawn schematically and are not to scale)
(A)(see figure)✓ Correct
(B)(see figure)
(C)(see figure)
(D)(see figure)
Answer: (A)
Solution
Let the potential of the node joining the three capacitors be V. Charge conservation there gives C(E−V)=1⋅V+2⋅V, so V=3+CCE and the charge on the 2μF capacitor is Q2=2V=3+C2CE. As C grows from 1μF to 3μF, Q2 rises from 0.5E to E; since dCdQ2=(3+C)26E shrinks as C increases, the curve goes up but is concave down, bending over and flattening (it would approach 2E only as C→∞). The correct graph is the one that rises and is concave down between these two values of C.
