The supply voltage to a room is 120 V . The resistance of the lead wires is 6Ω. A 60 W bulb is already switched on. What is the decrease of voltage across the bulb, when a 240 W heater is switched on in parallel to the bulb?
(A)2.9 Volt
(B)13.3 Volt
(C)10.04 Volt✓ Correct
(D)zero volt
Answer: (C)
Solution
Both appliances are rated at the supply voltage, so their resistances come straight from R=V2/P: the bulb is Rb=601202=240Ω and the heater Rh=2401202=60Ω. With only the bulb glowing it sits in series with the 6Ω lead wires, so the voltage across it is V1=120×246240≈117.1V. Switch the heater in parallel with the bulb and that pair combines to 300240×60=48Ω; the total becomes 6+48=54Ω and the bulb voltage falls to V2=120×5448≈107.0V. The decrease across the bulb is therefore close to 10V.
