Which of the following species exhibits the diamagnetic behaviour?
  1. (A)✓ Correct
  2. (B)
  3. (C)
  4. (D)NO

Answer: (A)

Solution

The peroxide ion carries eighteen electrons, and in its molecular-orbital arrangement every orbital up to and including both antibonding levels is filled with paired electrons. With no unpaired electron it is diamagnetic. The other species each retain an unpaired electron and so are paramagnetic, leaving the peroxide ion as the diamagnetic one.
