Two identical uniform discs roll without slipping on two different surfaces AB and CD (see figure) starting at A and C with linear speeds v1 and v2, respectively, and always remain in contact with the surfaces. If they reach B and D with the same linear speed and v1=3m/s, then v2 in m/s is (g=10m/s2)
Answer: 7
Solution
For a disc rolling without slipping, total kinetic energy is 43mv2. Using energy conservation for disc 1: 43m(3)2+mg(30)=43mvf2. For disc 2: 43mv22+mg(27)=43mvf2. Since both reach the same final speed, equating: 43⋅9+300=43v22+270. Solving: 427+30=43v22, giving v22=49, hence v2=7 m/s.
