The number of optically active products obtained from the complete ozonolysis of the given compound is
  1. (A)0✓ Correct
  2. (B)1
  3. (C)2
  4. (D)4

Answer: (A)

Solution

Complete ozonolysis of the given compound cleaves all the C=C double bonds. The compound shown has three double bonds. Upon ozonolysis, each double bond is cleaved to form carbonyl compounds (aldehydes or ketones). Examining the structure, the ozonolysis products are achiral carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones without chiral centers). Since none of the products contain chiral centers, the number of optically active products is 0.
