A small spherical monoatomic ideal gas bubble (γ=35) is trapped inside a liquid of density ρℓ (see figure). Assume that the bubble does not exchange any heat with the liquid. The bubble contains n moles of gas. The temperature of the gas when the bubble is at the bottom is T0, the height of the liquid is H and the atmospheric pressure is P0 (Neglect surface tension).
When the gas bubble is at a height y from the bottom, its temperature is
(A)T0(P0+ρℓgyP0+ρℓgH)2/5
(B)T0(P0+ρℓgHP0+ρℓg(H−y))2/5✓ Correct
(C)T0(P0+ρℓgyP0+ρℓgH)3/5
(D)T0(P0+ρℓgHP0+ρℓg(H−y))3/5
Answer: (B)
Solution
For an adiabatic process, P1−γTγ=constant, which gives PT−γ/(1−γ)=constant. With γ=5/3, this becomes PT−5/2=constant, or T∝P2/5. At the bottom, P1=P0+ρℓgH and T1=T0. At height y, P2=P0+ρℓg(H−y). Thus T2=T0(P1P2)2/5=T0(P0+ρℓgHP0+ρℓg(H−y))2/5.
