Let the circle C touch the line x−y+1=0, have the centre on the positive x -axis, and cut off a chord of length 134 along the line −3x+2y=1. Let H be the hyperbola α2x2−β2y2=1, whose one of the foci is the centre of C and the length of the transverse axis is the diameter of C . Then 2α2+3β2 is equal to
Answer: 19
Solution
Let the centre of C be (p,0), p>0, with radius r.
Touching x−y+1=0:
r=2∣p+1∣⟹r2=2(p+1)2...(i)
Distance from the centre to −3x+2y=1 is d=13∣3p+1∣. With chord length 134:
r2−d2=(132)2=134⟹13r2=(3p+1)2+4...(ii)
From (i) and (ii):
213(p+1)2=(3p+1)2+4⟹13p2+26p+13=18p2+12p+10
5p2−14p−3=0⟹(p−3)(5p+1)=0
Since p>0, p=3, giving r=24=22.
For the hyperbola H:α2x2−β2y2=1, the transverse-axis length equals the diameter of C: 2α=2r=42⟹α2=8. One focus is the centre of C, (3,0), so αe=3, and α2e2=α2+β2:
9=8+β2⟹β2=1
2α2+3β2=2(8)+3(1)=19
