Given below is the plot of the molar conductivity vs concentration for KCl in aqueous solution.
If, for the higher concentration of KCl solution, the resistance of the conductivity cell is 100Ω, then the resistance of the same cell with the dilute solution is ' x ' Ω.
The value of x is _____ (Nearest integer)
Answer: 150
Solution
For a strong electrolyte like KCl, molar conductivity falls roughly linearly with c: from the graph, Λm=100 S cm² mol⁻¹ at the higher concentration (c=0.15) and Λm=150 S cm² mol⁻¹ at the lower, dilute concentration (c=0.1). The cell constant G∗=κR is fixed for a given cell, and κ=1000Λmc, so ΛmcR is the same for both solutions. With c=(c)2: 100×(0.15)2×100=150×(0.1)2×Rdil, giving 225=1.5Rdil, so Rdil=150Ω.
