Thiosulphate reacts differently with iodine and bromine in the reaction given below :

Which of the following statement justifies the above dual behaviour of thiosulphate?
  1. (A)Bromine undergoes oxidation and iodine undergoes reduction by iodine in these reactions
  2. (B)Thiosulphate undergoes oxidation by bromine and reduction by iodine in these reaction
  3. (C)Bromine is a stronger oxidant than iodine✓ Correct
  4. (D)Bromine is a weaker oxidant than iodine

Answer: (C)

Solution

With , sulphur in goes (mild oxidation, forms tetrathionate); with it goes (forms sulphate). The stronger oxidant drives the deeper oxidation, i.e. bromine is a stronger oxidant than iodine. Option (3).
