Given below are two statements:

Statement - I: Along the period, the chemical reactivity of the element gradually increases from group 1 to group 18.
Statement - II: The nature of oxides formed by group 1 element is basic while that of group 17 elements is acidic.
In the the light above statements, choose the most appropriate from the questions given below:
  1. (A)Both statement I and Statement II are true.
  2. (B)Statement I is true but Statement II is False.
  3. (C)Statement I is false but Statement II is true.✓ Correct
  4. (D)Both Statement I and Statement II is false.

Answer: (C)

Solution

Chemical reactivity does not rise monotonically across a period from group 1 to group 18. It is highest for the group 1 alkali metals, falls as effective nuclear charge increases and atomic size decreases across the period, and drops to essentially zero for the noble gases of group 18 — so Statement I is false. Group 1 oxides such as are strongly basic, dissolving in water to give hydroxides, while group 17 oxides such as are acidic, forming oxoacids like — so Statement II is true.
