Let the locus of the mid points of the chords of circle x2+(y−1)2=1 drawn from the origin intersect the line x+y=1 at P and Q . Then, the length of PQ is :
(A)21✓ Correct
(B)2
(C)21
(D)1
Answer: (A)
Solution
Let M(h,k) be the midpoint of a chord of the circle x2+(y−1)2=1 (centre C(0,1)) drawn from the origin O(0,0).
Since M is the midpoint of a chord, CM is perpendicular to that chord; and the chord passes through O, so OM lies along the chord. Hence CM⊥OM, which means M lies on the circle having OC as diameter.
Circle on diameter OC, with O(0,0) and C(0,1): centre (0,21), radius 21:
x2+(y−21)2=41⟹x2+y2−y=0.
Intersect with x+y=1, i.e. x=1−y:
(1−y)2+y2−y=0⟹2y2−3y+1=0⟹y=1 or y=21.
y=1⇒x=0: P(0,1). y=21⇒x=21: Q(21,21).
PQ=(21)2+(21)2=21=21.
