Statement (I) : (see structure A) is more polar than (see structure B)
Statement (II) : Boiling point of (see structure C) is lower than (see structure D) but it is more polar than (see structure E)
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :ABCDE
(A)Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect✓ Correct
(B)Statement I is incorrect but statement II is correct
(C)Both statement I and statement II are incorrect
(D)Both statement I and statement II are correct
Answer: (A)
Solution
In the first statement both molecules are cis dihaloethenes, so in each the two bond dipoles reinforce rather than cancel and both are polar; because chlorine is more electronegative than bromine, the cis dichloro compound carries the larger resultant dipole and is indeed the more polar of the two, so the first statement holds. In the second statement the compound examined is trans-1,2-dibromoethene, whose two C−Br dipoles point oppositely and cancel, making it non-polar. Its boiling point is lower than that of the cis isomer, which is true, but a non-polar molecule cannot be more polar than the polar cis isomer, so that part fails. The first statement is correct while the second is incorrect.
