A uniform bar of length 12 cm and mass 20m lies on a smooth horizontal table. Two point masses m and 2m are moving in opposite directions with same speed of v and in the same plane as the bar, as shown in figure. These masses strike the bar simultaneously and get stuck to it. After collision the entire system is rotating with angular frequency ω. The ratio of v and ω is :
(A)33✓ Correct
(B)288
(C)66
(D)32
Answer: (A)
Solution
Take the origin at the centre of the bar. From the figure the 2m mass strikes 2cm from the centre on one side and the m mass strikes 4cm from the centre on the other side, moving in opposite directions. The centre of mass of the final system remains at the bar's centre, since the moments 2m(2) and m(4) balance. Conserving angular momentum about this centre (both impacts drive the same sense of rotation),
L=2mv(2)+mv(4)=4mv+4mv=8mv(distances in cm).
The moment of inertia of the combined body about the centre is
I=1220m(12)2+2m(2)2+m(4)2=240m+8m+16m=264m.
With L=Iω, 8mv=264mω, so ωv=33. The ratio v:ω is 33.
