A body of mass 14 kg initially at rest explodes and breaks into three fragments of masses in the ratio 2:2:3. The two pieces of equal masses fly off perpendicular to each other with a speed of 18m/s each. The velocity of the heavier fragment is ____ m/s.
(A)102
(B)122✓ Correct
(C)12
(D)242
Answer: (B)
Solution
The fragments have masses in the ratio 2:2:3, that is 4 kg, 4 kg and 6 kg for the 14 kg body. Since the body is initially at rest, the total momentum stays zero. The two equal fragments fly off perpendicular to each other at 18 m/s, each carrying momentum 4×18=72kgm/s; their resultant has magnitude 722+722=722kgm/s. The heavier fragment must carry an equal and opposite momentum, so 6v=722, giving v=122m/s.
