Arrange the following carbanions in the decreasing order of stability I. p−Br−C6H4−C⊖H2 II. C6H5−C⊖⊖H2 III. p−CH3O−C6H4−C⊖⊖H2 IV. p−CHO−C6H4−C⊖⊖H2 V. (see structure) Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
(A)I > II > IV > V > III
(B)I > IV > II > V > III
(C)IV > I > II > V > III✓ Correct
(D)IV > II > I > III > V
Answer: (C)
Solution
A benzylic carbanion is stabilised by electron-withdrawing para substituents that disperse the negative charge and destabilised by electron-donating ones. The −CHO group in IV (−M and −I) is the strongest acceptor and gives the most stable carbanion, followed by the weakly withdrawing −Br in I and then the unsubstituted benzyl carbanion II. The p-CH3 in V is a weak donor and destabilises slightly, while the p-OCH3 in III is a strong +M donor and destabilises most. The decreasing order of stability is IV>I>II>V>III.
