Two p-n junction diodes D1 and D2 are connected as shown in figure. A and B are input signals and C is the output. The given circuit will function as a ______.
(A)OR Gate
(B)NOR Gate
(C)NAND Gate
(D)AND Gate✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
In the circuit a resistor pulls the output C up towards Vdc=5 V, and the two diodes connect the inputs A and B to C with their cathodes on the input side. If either input is low, that diode is forward biased and conducts, clamping C to the low level. Only when both inputs are high are both diodes reverse biased, allowing the resistor to hold C at the high level. The output is high solely for A and B both high, which is the behaviour of an AND gate.
